Skating & Hockey Complex Upgrade
Underwood Park Ice Rinks Complex Project
Lake City Public Works/Parks Department is requesting approval to submit a grant to the MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the Outdoor Recreation Grant Program to redevelop the current outdoor ice skating rink at Underwood Park into two ice skating rinks (on the same site). The current rink has a gravel base, and a mobile warming house that is not accessible. A portable restroom is currently available for skaters. A new warming house with an accessible restroom will also be included.
Project scope:
· The proposed project would create concrete bases for two 80’ x 140’ rinks, replacing the current gravel base rink. Concrete bases will last 30+ years, provide a better and more consistent skating surface, longer ice duration, and will require basic maintenance.
· One rink will be used for hockey and broomball (and open skating), with a dasher board system, and the other rink will be used for open skating.
· New drainage systems will direct melting ice water to an existing retention pond.
· The proposed heated warming house will be accessible, with an ADA compliant restroom.
· Rink lighting will be upgraded to LED as part of the project.
· The concrete bases will be used in warmer months for a variety of hard surface court activities, including basketball.
There will be no charge to skate at the new Underwood rinks, and donated skates (Peters Memorial Fund) are and will be available for the public to use at no cost. The rinks will be open for ice skating from mid December to mid February, and can be used for other recreational activities throughout the year.
The grant is due to the DNR on March 31. If you have any comments, please contact Amanda Jackson, Public Works Administrative Assistant at 651-448-8145 or via email at: ajackson@ci.lake-city.mn.us .
